Portchester B v Curdridge - 25.11.07

Portchester B (23pts) - 113 for 2 (11.2 ov) beat Curdridge (7pts) - 111 for 5 (12 ov)
Match report by Simon Gale

Portchester B won by 4 wickets
Batting: Dave Taylor 25*, Simon Gale 23*, Steve Nutland 22
Bowling: Rick Harding 3/13

First surprise of the night, Skipper Stainton relegated to pencil and paper duty. To be replaced by young Rick Harding. Skipper for the night Steve Nutland started badly when he could not catch the coin for the toss. However, after a couple of attempts called right and choose to bowl. More experienced bowlers shown the way by young Rick who bowled 3 overs 3/13. Nutters had a nightmare 3 overs for 41. Unable to dislodge last man who scored 32 not out. Curdridge ended 111 for 5.

Porchester innings given momentum by Dave Taylor who blasted 25 not out in his own style of wild swishes and elegant cover drives. Gale joined Nutland at the crease and everything was looking good until Nutters hit ball high into air and was run out for 22. Young came and went relatively quickly. Gale (23 not out) and Harding then saw Portchester home with three balls to spare. Goodey for the second game running not required to wield the bat

2nd Team Promotion

Chairmans message :-
I would like to congratulate Charlie and all the players who contributed to the 2nd team being promoted into the Hampshire League South 1 for the 2008 season. This is the highest level that the 2nd team of the club will have played in, and a massive achievement for everyone associated with it.
Everyone who thinks that they maybe a member of the side in 2008, should however look at the other teams that will make up this division. You will see that there is a lot more travelling and a lot of away games will mean earlier starts. It would be helpful to everyone if you talk to Charlie about availability earlier rather than later so that he can start to plan for the season. Listed are the teams in this division for next year : Read the rest of this entry »

Phil’s Aussie Blog - Number 2

G’day cobbers!

So what’s gone on? First up I’ve moved house into Cranbourne to stay with Gaylene, Daz’s Mum. Mick’s family were very accommodating and their hospitality was second to none, but was a bit out on a limb with no access to the limited public transport over here so Crannie it is! I wonder if I’ll get to stay in Nook as well… Gaylene is a very chilled host, I’m very certain this Aussie hospitality won’t get boring. We ended up getting a bit drunk whilst chewing the fat, especially with the house special - Cowboy shooters!

Another Sat not playing cricket, at least got to see Q playing the Elmer Fudd part! Ended up doing a lot of scoring, just for something to do, hoping desperately for a pick at selection night, Can’t handle this any more!

Q’s birthday was the flavour of the evening after leaving the Hallam rooms (and having drunk sensibly, I’m not falling asleep again!). Started off with a very frustrating 40 min wait for my lift (which may or may not have involved Lester, you decide…). I know I shouldn’t complain, but they did say they’d be here earlier. This translated into being late for the club and therefore having to wait for 30 mins in a queue waiting to get in, via the 1 in 1 out policy. Once in, had a good time. Tom Thumbs again (the Chicago rock substitute) and the Philly dancing socks were in full groove mode! After a couple of nights of flaking out early, managed to stay ready for a long night, only for there to have been some confusion on the after party plans and everyone else went home. Should’ve got bladdered anyway! At least Q was hammered, job done. Read the rest of this entry »

Portchester A v Locks Heath A - 18.11.07

Portchester A (24pts) - 78 for 1 (8.2 ov) beat Locks Heath A (2pts) - 74 all out (11.3 ov)
Match report by Paul Hungerford

For the third time in a row (a personal record I think!) the A Team won the toss and elected to bowl. As was the case with the preceding games, Craig Coward (3 overs 13 for 1) got us off to a fine start, claiming the wicket of Jones, who slashed a cut shot in the air, which bounced off the side wall and straight into Ed Jordan’s gloves. 8 for 1 after the first over. Rob Fackrell bowled the second over for just 5 runs and with Craig only going for 4 in his second the pressure told, with M. Boyd taking a risky single to Paul Hungerford, who hit the stumps, running out Wills for 1. Boyd took Rob for 13 off his next over - the last 2 balls went for 6, hitting Rob out of the attack and retiring in quick time in the process. Craig’s final over went for just 1 and again the pressure told when a mix-up in the calling allowed for an easy run-out. Paul threw to Ed, who took the bails off - C. Boyd run out without facing a ball. With the score on 31 for 3 after 5 overs, Locks Heath were up against it. Read the rest of this entry »

Presentation Evening - 17.11.07

dave-presentation.jpgMany thanks to Dave O’Neill (left), who arranged a fantastic evening for this year’s Presentation Evening. Personally I felt that the venue was the best for the Evening that I have been to - it was the right size, the food was good and most importantly the price of beer was very reasonable!

The club owes Dave and Ian Docker who helped him a huge debt for all the hard work they did to get the do on. We should also thank Keith Wood for volunteering to be the DJ for the night and Charlie & Dianne who helped arrange all the tables and chairs. Thanks also to Craig who managed to keep the Presentation down to less than 2 hours this year and Dave Pearson for his wonderfully entertaining speech!

Portchester A v Portsmouth & Southsea A - 11.11.07

Portchester A (23pts) - 95 for 2 (11.3 ov) beat Portsmouth & Southsea A (5pts) - 92 for 5 (12 ov)
Match report by Paul Hungerford

The A Team got back into the winning habit with a win over Portsmouth & Southsea A. Porthester won the toss and elected to bowl first. In the absence of Travis Sawyer, (who by the sounds of things has got a serious shoulder injury - wishing you as speedy a recovery as possible Tractor) Craig Coward and Paul Hungerford opened the bowling. As usual Craig (3 overs 23 for 2) got the innings off to a very solid start with only 7 conceded of the first over, including the wicket of no. 2 bat Jewitt first ball, who could only edge a lifting ball to Dave O’Neill who took a very good catch with the ball ricocheting around in the corner. Things were looking even better when Paul (3 overs for 30) claimed the wicket of the other opener Dyer, caught and bowled inches of the ground, whilst diving forward. The batsmen claimed the catch was dropped - it was straight in, no doubt about it. The standing umpire couldn’t see, so he consulted the square leg umpire who thought it was out, and yet the bat managed to stay in! Needless to say he smashed 2 of Paul’s next 3 balls for 6. (I’m not bitter or anything!) Read the rest of this entry »

Phil’s Aussie Blog - Number 1

Hello from Oz!! Here’s the low-down on the first couple of weeks.

First up, the flight, what an ordeal! 20 hours travelling, having picked up a cold on the flight, with only two hours sleep (max), not nice.

No excuse though once I’d arrived, bought a bat (Not a Kookaburra in the end, a Gray Nichols Predator. 2lb8oz, feels like a matchstick at the mo’, but will hopefully help my cross batted game) and some shoes, then went to watch Q-bird and others get smacked by Gilchrist, Langer, Hodge etc from the WA state team at a practice session at the MCG. Thought about some Philthy spinners but didn’t want to embarrass them before a big game…

Then of to practice at Hallam…a lovely ground, almost all weed and no grass, they even roll in grass cuttings onto the square just so it’s got something on it! I’m making it sound worse than it is though, whilst the outfield might be a bit of a Kingsclere, the wicket looks true enough. Same for both sides….. Read the rest of this entry »

Portchester B v Fareham Crofton B - 04.11.07

Portchester B (8pts) - 130 for 2 (12 ov) lost to Fareham & Crofton B (20pts) - 131 for 2 (10 ov)
Match report by Craig Stainton

Another shocker by the B Team. Batting first Taylor (11) and Nutland (20) got off to a slow start. Talyor trying to quicken the scoring got Run Out. Gale joined Nutland and a partnership of 20 between the two before Gale (10) was caught going for a big hit. Stainton arrived with the score 52 for 2, with extras scoring to help the team. Nutland and Stainton scored freely with lots of extras (59) coming throughout the innings. Stainton finished on 24* with Young (4) final score 130 for 3.

The bowling lacked any penetration and Fareham looked comfortable all the way through their innings, while having a few lucky moments. Fareham reached their total in the tenth over with only Nutland and Taylor taking wickets, mind you at least this week there was a catch taken by Jade. Improvement.

This again was a performance that will see the B Team fighting against relegation this term unless improvement all round is achieved. The team needs new blood! Anyone interested?
