Match report by Paul Hungerford

On another beautiful morning at the School, Portchester U13s found themselves batting first. Nobody got themselves ‘in’ and as a result the innings never really got going and the run-rate remained at around 4 runs an over from start to finish. Ash Zee opening the innings played well, top scoring with 15, Stan Rolls (10) was the only other batsmen to reach double figures. 27 extras helped us reach 77 all out with 2 balls of the innings remaining.

The Rowner reply was very similar to Sarisbury’s a week earlier. Sam Stainton and Matt Crouch (4 overs 10 for 1) again both took wickets in their first overs. Rowner’s number 3, J. Pannell played well to take his side to within touching distance of the win and when he retired on 30*, they had taken their score to 70 for 3 off 17 overs. Just 8 required off 3 overs to win. Ash held his nerve in the 18th, conceding just the 2 runs. Sam Stainton bowled the penultimate over and picked up a hat-trick! Matt taking two fine catches, pouncing in quickly on balls lobbed up to the in-field. 3 runs came off the over, to leave Sam with fine figures of 4 overs, 13 runs for 4 wickets. So with 1 over left Rowner required 3 runs to win. Captain Stan (4 overs for 9 runs) held his nerve and bowled full and straight and forced the batsmen to hit through the field. Only 1 run was scored off the first 5 balls, so Rowner needed 1 off the last ball to tie and 2 to win. A great comeback was on the cards! However a scrambled single (Charlie’s stump hitting heroics for the 2nds the day before could not be repeated) got Rowner a tie, which was probably a fair result in the end.

Congratulations to both teams for providing us with an entertaining game of cricket with a fantastic finish!
