Match report by Paul Hungerford

Portchester won the toss and elected to bat first. The innings got of to a familiar start with both Sam Stainton and Matt Crouch (4 overs for 6 runs) bowling tight spells. Sam made the breakthrough in the 5th over with only 9 on the scoreboard. Fareham played well in the middle of the innings though to get back on track, helped largely by Luke Hearnden’s innings of 34*. 27 extras, 21 in wides also helped their cause and they made steady progress after the slow start. A spate of wickets fell towards the end of the innings as Fareham looked to push on. They finished on 101 all out with 2 balls remaining. Shaun Johnston the main wicket taker, taking 3 for 17 off his 2.4 overs and Fareham’s Cransow playing for us took 2 for 4 runs off his only over. Sam took a wicket in his final over to finish with fine figures of 2 for 9 off his 4 overs. Again the fielding is worth mentioning and was a high standard throughout.

102 looked a tough total to chase, however Matt and Ashley Zee batted very positively at the top of the innings, hitting boundaries and running well and were on 51 when Ash fell for 9 at the start of the 5th over! The innings calmed down after the frenetic start and we chased the runs down in the 15th over. Sam batted well with 14* to see the side home. 49 extras helped us greatly and Matt played a fine Captains knock in Stan’s absence, retiring on 30* in the 8th over with 6 boundaries to his name.

Well played the Colts in what was certainly their best performance of the season so far.
