“Ampfield police investigate major larceny at the rear of the White Horse at around 19.40 on Saturday evening”
Serendipity prevailed for Portchester II on Saturday. The first foray into Regional Division South 1 also brought a victory in a thrilling finish. Having been inserted after losing the toss, the muggy conditions helped the tidy Ampfield bowling by Foreman and Baldock. Stoic batting from Lee Hungerford and Phil Vincent (25), including a smattering of fine drives, was followed by Charles Jordan (70 not out) ably supported by Josh Young and lusty blows from Stuart Parsons and Dave Taylor. Sahib (4-47) pegged the total back to 176 all out – a middling target as the sun broke out and an excellent batting pitch flattened out.
In reply, Ampfield lost Holding in the first over, bowled by Taylor. Despite tidy bowling from Gale and Fackrell, Williams, 68 and Sahib (65) put Ampfield in pole position at 136 for 1 with 10 overs remaining. Wickets fell to Vincent and Hungerford but only four were required off the last over. Taylor steamed in, but two wides left two required off the last ball. A push into the offside was collected by cover like an eagle swooping on its prey and a direct hit at the bowlers’ end sealed the win and the celebrations started.
Regional Division 4 South East League Match played at Privett Park
Portchester III (4pts) 145 for 9 lost to Portsmouth & Southsea IV (23pts) 146 for 1
Portsmouth & Southsea IV won by 9 wickets
Match report by Ian Docker
“Oh what a circus!” fine words written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice but also uttered by the less talented 3rd eleven skipper on the worst bowling and fielding performance seen for a long time.
Portsmouth and Southsea won the toss and put us in on a very slow wicket.
Mike Osmond, picking up a bat for the first time since July, opened with Tom Adams and made a steady start with an opening stand of 68. Osmond 30 and Adams 29. Derek Kelly at four added a quick 26 with only John Biggs reaching double figures.
After tea Chris Furnell and Ricky Harding opened the bowling. Ricky being the most effective of all of the Portchester Bowlers returning figures of 6 overs for 17 runs. He had the opener dropped on 5, their opening partnership producing 137. Derek Kelly got the only wicket with a fine catch by Tom Adams in the deep.
P.S Tim Rice was also a fine cricketer. Wonder if he is available next week. That is if he can afford the fees.
