Portchester A v Bedhampton A – 04.10.09

Posted by Admin on October 18, 2009

Portchester A (23pts) 114 for 3 (10.4 ov) beat Bedhampton A (8pts) 113 for 5 (12 ov)

Portchester A won by 3 wickets

Batting: L Hungerford 27*, P Hungerford 14, C Coward 13*
Bowling: C Coward 1/19, D O’Neill 1/23, L Hungerford 1/26

A great start to the Indoor A season with a solid win against a strong Bedhampton side.

Portchester started badly with me arriving late for my first game as captain but I made up for it with a win of the toss and put Bedhampton into bat.

Craig bowled to his high standard and thanks to a slightly overly dramitic diving catch at mid off from Lee was soon in the wickets. The first 6 overs past with the fall of another wicket thanks to another good catch from Lee. Lee bowled an attacking spell and claimed a wicket with a well directed yorker. A welcome sight was Paul back playing in Portchester colours after a lengthy lay off. Paul bowled with pace and was unlucky to see his final over recieve a bit of tap. A few run outs left Bedhampton on a total of 113 for 5. Apart from a easy run out chance that went begging our fielding was excellent.

In went Lee and Ed to open the batting and they started off possitively and ran well. Ed, suffering from fatigue from the previous night, decided that the back wall was favourite. A few moment later he was back in the “pavillion” out caught. Out came Paul and hung around for a while, supporting Lee’s innings. Paul made double figures before being run out from a direct hit. Out came Steve who also ran well with Lee and whacked it a bit. Lee retired and out went Craig needing 8ish an over. Steve was caught and bowled leaving Dave and Craig to finish it off. A few wides and a few singles later the game was won with over an over to spare.

Good running, solid bowling and top fielding display won this game for us. Although there is room to improve, the standard has been set.

Portchester A v Fareham & Crofton A – 08.11.09

Posted by Admin on March 11, 2009

Portchester A (22pts) 78 for 3 (10.4 ov) beat Fareham and Crofton (4pts) 75 all out (11.4 ov)

Portchester A won by 3 wickets

Batting: E Jordan 26*
Bowling: P Hungerford 3/15, L Hungerford 1/13

We won our last game of the season against Fareham & Crofton A to finish in a respectable 4th place. We couldn’t expect for anything better after losing to the top 3 teams and the shocker against 5-man Purbrook A.

We bowled Fareham out for just 75. Everyone bowled really well and straight (only 2 wides – both by Paul). Paul took 3 wickets for 15, whilst Dave’s 3 overs only went for 12. Lee also picked up a wicket and there were 2 run outs, including a direct hit by Dave in the first over.

We were a bit shaky in reply and got to the target 3 down in the 11th over. 30 extras and Ed’s best knock of the season (26*) saw us home.

Portchester A v United Services – 08.02.09

Posted by Admin on February 10, 2009

Portchester A (22pts) 101 for 5 (12 ov) beat United Services (5pts) 56 all out (9.5 ov)

Portchester A won by 45 runs

Batting: P Hungerford 38*, E Jordan 18, C Coward 15
Bowling: C Harding 2/19, P Hungerford 1/6, D O’Neill 1/8,  C Coward 1/21

After two losses in a row and a shocking performance last time out, it was important for us to bounce back with a win against a United Services team who had also won 3, lost 3.

The US skipper won the toss and put us into bat for the first time all season. We scored an average total of 101 for 5. US bowled well though and didn’t give us much with only 18 coming in extras. Paul top scored with 38* and Ed chipped in with another 18.

Fielding a strong bowling line-up we felt we had a good chance of defending our score. We bowled and fielded very well – possibly even better than when we bowled out P&S for 35. All five chances that went to hand were caught, including a sharp take by Ed behind square on the off-side and a flying edge through to Lee. All the bowlers were tidy and picked up a wicket, with Clark taking two, and we bowled US out for just 56 in the 10th over. An excellent performance in the field and a much needed win, which took us back up to third in the table.

Portchester A – Purbrook A – 25.01.09

Posted by Admin on February 2, 2009

Portchester A (7pts) 88 all out (10.1 ov) lost to Purbrook A (21pts) 96 all out (12 ov.)

Purbrook A won by 8 runs

Batting: D O’Neill 23, E Jordan 18, P Hungerford 16
Bowling: D O’Neill 2/10, P Hungerford 1/29, C Harding 1/30

This was probably the most disappointing Indoor result and performance by the A Team in quite a few seasons.

Purbrook A won the toss and batted first. We bowled and fielded OK, with Paul taking a couple of good catches. Dave was by far the pick of the bowlers though with excellent figures of 3 overs, 2 wickets for only 10 runs. A fine effort that none of the other bowlers got near to. S. Mitchell played very well for his 40 and was eventually run out on the final ball of the innings, to take Purbrook to 96 all out.

97 was a total we were confident of chasing down – particularly considering they were a man short! We batted poorly though; both Ed and Paul were guilty of getting out in the teens, when surely a retirement would have effectively sealed the win. We were up with the required rate for most of the innings, but wickets fell regularly to leave only Dave left. Two successive sixes later and we only needed 9 to win off 2 overs. However Mitchell came back into the attack and bowled Dave first ball and left us all gutted to lose after such a poor display.
