The brains trust of Biggs, Buckle, Gale and Hungerford had a shocker at the Hampshire League’s annual Sports Quiz, held at Bath Lane on the 21st February.
Biggsy filling in for the unavailable Stainton particularly enjoyed his evening!! Although he did make the most of the free sandwiches on offer…
The team’s final score of 116 saw them finish in 7th place on the night [out of 7!] and 19th overall - out of 25. With the top 18 sides going through to the next round, we missed out by one place and by 5 points. Mr Biggs was devastated not to make it through!
Portchester A (4pts) - 71 for 5 (12 ov) lost to Portsmouth (23pts) - 138 for 3 (12 ov)
Portsmouth won by 67 runs
Bowling: John Biggs 2/23
As the scores suggest, this was a terrible performance by the A Team. Not helped by last minute injuries - Lee played despite being hardly able to walk; having a dead-leg from playing football in the morning and Steve O’Neill couldn’t play having picked up a back strain on the Sunday morning! Thanks to John Biggs for filling in at late notice. Biggsy was the only Portchester player who came out of the match with any credit, picking up 2 for 23 from his 3 overs….. A return to the A Team beckons?!
I am still waiting on scorer Staints to write his report on the match as intended. For the first time ever he is speechless and doesn’t know what to write! As soon as he finds the words I’ll put the report on here, although the match can be summarised in just the two - Barry Crocker!!
Portchester B (7pts) - 113 all out (11.3 ov) lost to DOE Cavaliers (24pts) - 118 for 2 (12 ov)
DOE Cavaliers won by 5 runs
Batting: Simon Gale 20, Josh Young 20
Ok, so it’s been a while since I’ve written, don’t worry I still love you all… I’ll probably miss some details given the months under the bridge but I’ll do my best. Cricket first…
The match from blog 2 concluded in disaster, an outright loss after losing 15 wickets in the day. Things just went from bad to worse all day, a duck in the 2nd dig for yours truly and in the end a 9th wicket partnership ensured the home team had to bat again…chasing 30 odd… Got a bowl (yes, a bowl! Seam up though Penfold, not Philthy cricket), startling figures of 4 overs 0/16. Interestingly my first delivery was a Harmison wide, didn’t cop much for that at all!
So onto the next game, average batting making 132 off 60 overs (honestly!) with a poxy 12 for me. One point of note here, the lovely bouncy artificial enabling a medium pacer to crack me one in the ear from just back of a length (I mean, I’m 6 foot 3!!), good realism methinks… A commanding 50 run lead once we got them out on day 2, yours truly having got the nod to bowl, only for the guy at the other end to polish off the remaining 2 wickets in one over. The skip sent us back in for a 20/20 style biff to get a quick lead big enough to roll them a second time. After my 28 plus some more significant runs elsewhere (not before I ran a guy out who’d scored 12 off of two imperious sixes…), old Father Time got the better of us and the game ended at 16:45 for some early drinks.
Now some non-cricket! Read the rest of this entry »
Portchester A (23pts) - 86 for 1 (8 ov) beat Sarisbury Athletic (3pts) - 83 for 5 (12 ov)
Match report by Paul Hungerford
After a 2 month break from the Indoor League, the A Team came back to face a Sarisbury side struggling at the wrong end of the table. The Sarisbury captain won the toss and elected to bat. Craig Coward and Rob Fackrell (3 overs for 16) got the innings off to a tight start, with Sarisbury scoring 31 off the first 5 overs. However it was Shaun Kelly (3 overs 28 for 2) that made the breakthrough with his 3rd ball - caught and bowled and he took another in the same manner. Shaun was well supported by Paul Hungerford (3 overs 22 for 1). Craig came back in to the attack to bowl the penultimate and once again his figures were excellent, 3 overs for just the 15 runs. A couple of late run-outs, as Sarisbury tried to get to a competitve total allowed us to take 5 wickets. P Friedrich was the main contributor to their final total of 83 for 5 with 38*.
